Facebook has just announced Places, the long-awaited feature that brings location-based functionality to the most popular social network in the world. This feature lets you share your current location by “checking in” from your smartphone. Places isn’t available everywhere yet.
Users who wish to announce their location to their friends on Facebook would tap a “check in” button to see a list of places nearby, and then choose the place that matches where they are.

Undersea Internet cables undergoing repairs after typhoon

Six of the important fiber-optic cables were damaged by undersea landslides caused by Typhoon Morakot as it passed Taiwan. One was knocked out on Aug. 9 as Morakot hit the east coast of the island, and the others were damaged after the typhoon passed to the other side.
