The Fundamental Difference

Keeping an open mind as a Designer is a lesson you need to learn early on. There is a fundamental difference between Artists and Designers. Artists create art for the sake of art. Designers create art for the sake of a client. You utilize your talents and gifts to interpret and communicate for your client. Your role is that of a problem solver.

A lot of really talented people out there that will not survive as Designers because they don’t realize the key importance of this role.
This doesn’t make what you do any less important; if anything, it makes it more important. A client has invested in their company, wants to communicate, give it life, a personality, and make it succeed. YOU are key to that. YOU create the personality.

It’s the “Brand” talking


Remember this when you feel hurt because the client doesn’t like the PMS color you chose for the logo. Realize that it is not a criticism of your work. It is their “brand” talking.

You must be open and receptive to the opinions of those who matter. It may not be exactly the style you like or utilize the techniques you prefer. Take this as a personal challenge and a growth opportunity.

When you find yourself rebelling at the suggestions of a client (or their secretary, or wife) follow these steps:

1. Put yourself in the place of the client
2. Put yourself in the place of the customer
3. Don’t take it personally
4. Voice your opinion only if it is non-objective
5. Save the ego for personal art projects

Be Prepared to Learn
Remember this: sometimes when you are feeling the most threatened as an “Artist” you are about to learn something as a “Designer”.
It’s hard to admit that someone else has it right. Allow yourself to let go in these moments and give in to collaboration. It’s not as terrible as it seems.
