Search engine results can usually filter by region or location. Search engines can also display results based on the searcher’s location or search phrases. Local search results can provide more than just site or blog entries, they also display maps, reviews, pictures, related sites and more.

On-Site
If we want our business to do well in our local markets so we need to optimize for those markets on our website. This means we need to include our location and other cities we serve throughout our web site. We also need to include our phone and address. There are ways to optimize well and ways to get our site penalized. Although we need to optimize for location(s), we need to also remember that the content needs to sell our company and create trust.
Off-Site
Every business needs to be concerned with off-site local search. Adding site to Google maps is a good example, but it isn’t so simple anymore. There are ways to enhance listing and get as much as out of that listing. A good SEO company can help with that.
